A leading Brazilian power company has put a pair of Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000 all flash arrays at the heart of a new service and storage system designed to handle a spike in customer transactions.

Copel (Companhia Paranaense de Energia) is the third largest electric power company in Brazil and the largest company in the State of Paraná, operating all the power generation, transmission, transformation, and distribution systems in the state.

Continued customer growth mean that the company’s existing systems were struggling to handle an ever-increasing transaction load. After researching an upgrade path, Copel decided it needed its new storage infrastructure to support at least 150,000 IOPs, with latency of no more than 1ms, with dedupe and compression enabled.

The company also decided that when it came to load balancing, logical unit numbers should not be bound to specific controllers, and the system should be able to support 24/7 continuity.

Copel decided traditional storage systems were not up the job and opted for two Huawei OceanStor Dorado 8000 V6 all flash NVMe arrays, deployed across two data centers. The systems deliver sub millisecond latency, even with deduplication and compression enabled, and are connected with Huawei’s HyperMetro gateway-free active-active connectivity technology, to deliver high local reliability and seamless failover.

The active-active architecture promises full balancing of loads, data volumes and hot data, through a combination of its load balancing algorithm, intelligent front-end distribution, global write cache, and global storage pool. It also negates the need for a traditional gateway, further reducing costs, while ensuring zero recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) during disaster recovery.
